Follow-up test: 2009 Acura TSX

Vehicle: 2009 Acura TSX Premium with Automatic Transmission
Price as tested: CDN$39225

Since the inception in 2004, we always considered TSX as one of our all-time favourite sports sedans. New for 2009, Acura introduced the 2nd generation TSX. We already impressed with its level of refinement, feature content, build quality and, most of all, dynamic abilities, as an all-rounded package.

We finally have a chance to take for a long drive with the 2nd generation TSX. Acura engineers really have softened up original car’s ride quality without losing any of its European suppleness. Unlike the North American Accord, TSX has a firmer European ride that traces back to its Euro Accord roots. TSX’s European roots clearly shown when pushed it through corners. Its not only the steering provides great feedback and response, its level of precision is only able to be seen this side of a Porsche. The body motions are exceptionally well controlled with minimal body rolls.

The most impressive aspect of TSX’s 2.4 liter i-VTEC DOHC engine is the fuel economy. While there have been no doubt regarding Honda powertrain’s combination of refinement, smooth delivery of torque and never ending power through the rev range. All of them have done without losing Honda’s hallmark fuel economy. With the 5-speed manumatic on our tester, we got an average of 9 liters per 100km which is impressive for 3470 lb of leather-lined luxury.

The interior materials and fit-and-finish are up to Acura’s high standards, although we still prefer the ougoing car’s cleanliness without all those buttons. There are just too many buttons on the center console and steering wheel. There are no less than 12 different buttons on the steering alone, what a button galleria!

What we are really worrisome about the upcoming V6 is whether it will unsettle TSX’s delicated balance. There aren’t many front-drive sedan handles as balanced and beautifully as TSX, with as many standard features for its price. We will give you an insightful review on the upcoming TSX V6 when it debuts a few months later. In the meantime, TSX is an attractive package that is very hard to overlooked in the marketplace.
