2005 Mazda Tribute GX/Ford Escape XLS

Short review of 2005 Mazda Tribute GX/Ford Escape XLS

Price as tested: CDN$28995

For 2005, both Mazda Escape and Ford Escape receive a base motor that it desperately needs since day 1. A 2.3L DOHC 16-valver 4 banger Duratec similar to one motivated the uplevel Mazda 3 and Ford Focus models. With 153 hp and 152 lb/ft of torque, it has 22 more horses and 17 lb/ft more torque than the outgoing 2.0L. While you still can’t called it a rocketship, it feels more peppy and responsive than the sluggish unit previously associated with this twins.

Another improvement is the shifter location. It finally placed on the console instead of the steering column. This design improves the user-friendliness of the shifter without hitting the windshield stark when pushed from P to D. It also looks classier with tasteful aluminum trim around the center console, at the same time, better interior materials and build quality than before.

Dynamically speaking, it handles decently given its based on the outgoing 626 platform. The steering feels crisp and responsive while the ride quality is supple and comfortable.

Given the current gas prices, its a smart move for Ford and Mazda to put a better base motor to attact more customers instead of relying on the more thirsty Duratec 3.0 V6. Along with their attactive pricing and nice exterior, this twins should continue to do well.
