Performance: Along with the introduction of V6 engine in TT, the biggest highlight has to be DSG or Direct Shift Gearbox tranny. This tranny has 2 clutches: 1st clutch for gear 1-3-5 and 2nd clutch for gear 2-4-6. The result is a shifting speed that is quicker than any stick shift available anywhere on the market. This sequential gearbox also has very smooth and linear during gear transitions. Another merits is that driver can up or downshift through the use of steering-mounted rocket switch on both “auto” or “sport” mode. If I have to find one pet peeve, however, its the computer sometimes outsmarts the driver when it comes to predict when is it going to change up or down a gear. Suffice to say, DSG has to be the best tranny I have ever driven in the world.

Other than the wonderful DSG, TT’s 3.2L DOHC V6 30-valver has more than enough grunt to move this puppy. With 250hp and 236 lb/ft of torque, its not only has better performance than “lowly” 1.8 TTs; it also feels more refined and flexible than to the extra 2 cylinders and extra displacement. The most pleasing aspect of this engine has to be its note. Its sound tuning is derived from Ferrari’s 360 Modena which is sexy. Despite that, given the chassis rigidty of TT, I would love to see Audi engineers messaged another 30-40hp from this engine because it still feels somewhat slower than some of its competitors from “seat-of-the-pants” feel.

Handling: Audi has stiffened up TT’s suspension, springs and shocks for V6 application. The result has a desired effect which V6 has sharper steering response and precision, fewer body rolls and less understeer when pushed through corners. The ESP setting isn’t too instrusive although its more instrusive than some units I have driven.

Brakes: TT’s pedal feel, modulation and control are all excellent thanks to its 4-wheel discs and ABS set-up. Its up to Audi’s usual high-standard of braking performance. Its also fade-free after a couple of hard stops from 80 km/h.

Interior: 4 years after introduction, TT’s interior remains timeless and classy thanks to its very well-executed design. Combine the use of excellent materials and build quality. The leather seats are comfortable with plenty of support. Instrumentation gauges are clear and analog. The toggle swiitches have a nice tactle feel to me. While the knobs for the climate control are effective and easier to use.

Conclusion: After the introduction of revolutionary Multitronic CVT back in 2000, Audi has upped the ante in the sequential department with the DSG. Its quick, its fast and its very easy to use. Combine DSG with a V6 that TT should receive back in day 1, you got a package that is very hard to resist.
